The Robert Sorby High Proformance Gold Collection is a series that is not new to the Sorby line of tools. This series of tools utilises a Titanium Nitride coating which has been tested over the years will drill and router bits. This coating is applied to conventional High Speed Steel. It enhances tool hardness which in turn significantly extends the life of the tool. These tools have have been tested and have lasted three times longer than conventional High Speed Steel on regular woods like maple, ash and sycamore. However, on tougher woods which are prone to dull edges quickly, Gold tools have outlasted others by 5 times and since the base material is not sacrificed, there is no loss of toughness, unlike other brands that the hardness has been increased, so has the brittleness.
